Turkey Makes a Step Forward Towards Equity-Based Crowdfunding

Equity-crowdfunding has been one of the widely discussed topics by the lawmakers in Turkey for a long time and now there is a significant development on the matter. A draft for crowdfunding will be passed next month, which will make equity-based crowdfunding officially come to life.

As for now, in Turkey only the running of prize-based crowdfunding campaigns is possible and the equity crowdfunding is not possible due to the existing regulations of banking, capital market and trade laws, the Treasury has made strong effort to regulate equity crowdfunding by conducting comprehensive studies on legislation and infrastructure.

After the regulations about equity-based crowdfunding are accepted, the supporters will be able to own a share of the company the back through crowdfunding. This will be a plus for both – entrepreneurs and the supporters.

In a comment about the regulation draft that will be submitted to Parliament in October, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek said that the document aims to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the country through empowering crowdfunding, research, and innovation.
