Facebook is preparing to make a significant investment in a large solar field in Texas. The company aims to work with fully renewable energy by the end of next year.
Partnering with Boston-based renewable energy developer Longroad Energy, the tech giant began building the Prospero Solar farm in Texas. The farm is planned to be established and operated next year. The field, which is expected to have a capacity of 379 megawatts, is sufficient to power around 72,000 homes.
The project will be one of the largest solar power fields in the country taking up around 18 square kilometers. This is the first investment that Facebook has made to the renewable energy project. The project will cost $ 416 million and Facebook is said to contributed “significant portion” of the total cost.
Shell Energy North America and Facebook will share the power generated by the solar farm. “Facebook is proud to be one of the first companies to invest directly in renewable energy.” said Facebook Energy Strategy Officer Peter.
“REBA is excited to see Facebook’s new approach to benefit renewable energy targets. If we are going to increase this market to 50,000 buyers, we will need flexible mechanisms like this to meet the needs of various buyers in the market.” said Miranda Ballentine, CEO of Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA).
Other technology giants have started to invest in this field too. Apple and Google are using various methods to abolish fossil fuel use. Both of these companies are working with fully renewable energy plans. Many of Apple’s suppliers also use clean energy.
