Autonomous Helicopter Luna Performs Its First Flight

Skyryse, a California-based aviation enterprise, brings a different approach in the autonomous vehicle world. Instead of building a new aircraft, Skyryse is working on an initiative that gives existing helicopters autonomous flight capability. They tested the flight platform for the autonomous helicopter they called Luna with the permission of the American Aviation Agency (FAA).

Skyryse Flight Stack autonomously flew the helicopter with the integrated system. The helicopter under control was vented and landed successfully after a short flight.

Integrated Auto Flight Software

The autonomous flight system integrated into the modified Robinson R-44 helicopter can become widespread and even become a standard after time of tests and approvals. This innovation can revolutionize air transport. Since the system can be integrated into piloted helicopters without a new hardware investment, it is important for developments in the autonomous vehicle world.

With this feature, helicopters will be able to fly independently of the pilots. The company says their autonomous helicopter technology can also take off and land in an emergency.

Skyryse has serious opponents in this field. Airbus and Boeing, commercial aircraft manufacturers, are working on their own air taxi projects. On the other hand, Skorsky, another helicopter manufacturer, has a project called SARA (Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft). Nowadays, autonomous vehicles are very busy in the world technology agenda, autonomous helicopter studies made by multiple technology manufacturers are exciting.

Mark Gorden, founder and CEO of Skyryse, emphasizes that the software capacity they have developed is very important. Skyryse says autonomous flight software can make flights more efficient and safer than pilots.

Getting autonomous helicopters in the cities will be an important step in the process. Nowadays, even in the case of regulations on autonomous automobiles, an autonomous helicopter may take time.
